Shapes of Worship

November 30th, 2009 by admin received 5 Comments »

A lot of times people will say to me “Man, I don’t really like to worship.” And I respond with “What do you mean you don’t like to worship?!” then I get “Well, I don’t like to sing..” Then I realized how confused they were. They thought that singing was the only form they could participate in. Before I go on I must say that I believe if we are to show up to church, then we are to participate in worship in song. I have a hard time seeing Heaven and only the people who feel like singing and worshiping do that. In a church service I believe, unless you are not a believer, that you should be trying to engage with God…..even if you don’t like to sing or aren’t the best singer. God loves our worship no matter what the sound. As long as it is authentic and true.

Now! back to where i was going. There are tons of ways to worship God and I am interested in things everyone else does. Write a comment below and take a look together at some different ways to worship our King.

cycling through the mountains, taking moments of silence observing God in creation and reflecting on Him and His promises is probably the most common way I worship.

  2. Awesome point man! I think that many people, even those who have grown up in or around church, see singing as the only way to worship. When in reality, worship is simply our response to God and what he is doing in our lives. We sometimes get too focused on how others appear to connect with God that we forget, or never learn, how to truly connect with Him.

    Stephen,
I really enjoy your perspective on this; especially, you being, a worship leader.
It is interesting the different things we all find important in our relationship with God.
I personally feel lost without Worship. It is the one place I feel the closest with God. I can sit and talk (pray) with Him, or take a walk in His great creation, but in Worship is where I feel that special intimacy in my relationship with God, that feeling of being filled.
I don’t feel “complete” so to speak if I miss worship when I go to church. I almost feel it opens me up to the message better.
I don’t always sing, sometimes I have those moments of just being taken away by the lyrics or simply the music. I more often then not close my eyes and just let Worship fill me completely. I have a tendency to let it take over more then my mind, more then my voice, but my body wants to rejoice too! :)
I tend to get emotional in the midst of Worship, it just melts everything else away and leaves me vulnerable and willing to embrace all that God wants to show.
I agree Worship takes many more forms then simply a voice.
Worship gets me right in my soul and lets the Holy Spirit entwine itself there.

Stephen, I agree with Aerin. Singing, especially at church, helps me enter into HIS presence. “Church” is not the same without the worship, and it has to be authentic. It’s easy to see when someone is ‘going through the motions’. It’s where the world melts away, and it’s just me and the King of Kings. That’s why, at least for me, I make a joyful NOISE!!..

I worship God through reading the Bible, singing made-up worship songs & speaking His Word to my friends!

Those are where I feel closest to God – because those moments are all about Him
